Using Martin-Zimmerman to abolish “stand your ground” laws

What else would we expect? Never let a good crisis go to waste. From Reuters:

U.S. attorney general questions ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws

“Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation’s attention, it’s time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods,” Holder said.

Being able to defend yourself without the legal burden of having to prove that you could have run away is to “senselessly expand the concept of self-defense”? What has happened to rational thinking?

For more nonsense, there’s this opinion piece from Newsday:

Bazelon: George Zimmerman’s not guilty. But Florida sure is.

It feels wrong, this verdict of not guilty for George Zimmerman. It feels wrong to say that Zimmerman is guilty of no crime. If he hadn’t approached 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, if he hadn’t pulled his gun, Martin would be alive.

I wasn’t going to go there; however, here goes: If the boy hadn’t bashed Zimmerman’s head against the pavement, he’d still be alive. As others have said, there’s no crime in following someone; however, punching someone’s nose and beating their head against the ground is assault. I’m sorry he attacked someone who was legally carrying a weapon.

More from Bazelon:

In Florida, a person “who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked” has no duty to retreat. He or she has the right to “meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself.”

I’m not seeing a problem with this law. Why should someone who felt it necessary to use lethal force have to prove he didn’t believe he could get away from the attacker? How can you prove what you were thinking? That’s also the problem with so-called civil rights violations. Thought police, anyone?

Bazelon again:

Maybe people like George Zimmerman should be held responsible for provoking the fight that they then fear they’ll lose. And maybe cuts to the back of the head and a bloody nose aren’t enough to show reasonable fear of grave bodily harm…why did Zimmerman feel so very threatened? Why did he pull his gun and shoot to kill? I don’t know.

The only available evidence showed that Martin was up close to Zimmerman and Zimmerman’s head and nose were cut and bloody. What was Zimmerman supposed to do? Would Bazelon not have felt threatened? Is Bazelon the judge of how much pummeling a person has to take before being allowed to defend himself?

Again, I’m sorry that Martin is dead. It shouldn’t have happened. But the stupidity coming from those who want to disarm us is breathtaking (or vomit-inducing, take your pick). Despite the lack of public interest (according to Yahoo! News, “Information from the Pew Research Center for Politics and the Press finds that 26 percent of the U.S. public was following news of the trial in advance of the July 13 verdict in which Zimmerman was found not guilty.”), they’re trying their hardest to stir up racial tensions and take away our right to lawfully defend ourselves.

What then? Trust those same people, the government, to come to our rescue? How’s that worked out in nations that have tried it? Look it up. It has not once turned out good for the common people.

UPDATE: Just came across this view of what’s going on by blogger Frank Brady:

Obama’s ultimate target is not George Zimmerman nor is it Florida’s “stand your ground’ law although he fully intends to eliminate both in passing. No, the ultimate goal is nothing less than the destruction of America’s traditional form of representative government. Obama is not acting in his capacity as President of the United States. He has no authority to comport himself in this way. Rather, he has simply reverted to type. He is acting as the leader of a lynch mob posse because that is what Alinsky-trained “community organizers” do.

Obama actions are the actions of a police-state tyrant. They are unconstitutional, dangerous, and completely unacceptable. The evidence will show that Obama and Holder conspired with Obama’s Organizing for Action organization, Al Sharpton and his National Action Network, the MoveOn organization, the NAACP, Florida State Attorney Angela Corey, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, the AP, and potentially others to:

  • Construct a false narrative of the events leading to the death of Trayvon Martin.
  • Bombard the public for weeks on end, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a media barrage of misinformation, disinformation, half-truths, and outright lies in a coordinated effort to deprive George Zimmerman of his civil rights. first by interfering with and attempting to influence the verdict in a State criminal trail and then by deliberately shaping a dangerous and false public perception of that verdict’s fairness.
  • Employ violence or the threat of violence in a brazen attempt to coerce State legislatures and the legislative process in such a way as to bring about the repeal of “stand your ground” statutes.

His suggestion:

Please contact  your Congressional representative and demand the immediate initiation of impeachment proceedings to remove Obama and Holder from their respective offices for engaging in a criminal conspiracy.

A good suggestion, if we could find someone untainted by the global elite to take his place. On the other hand, even if we did, “they” wouldn’t allow it. Was anyone paying attention to what “they” did to Ron Paul?
